Every establishment needs good employees. All individuals require a committed confidante. Every household needs a watch-person and every family needs a guardian.
They could be your parents, grandparents, a relative or just any other person that one might be comfortable to be taken care by…. In short, a Caretaker.
In a different
context and in relation to the industry of hospitality, he or she is akin to a custodian
for a specified period. This custodian, in this narration, transforms into all
the above as a caretaker at this place that one might be inclined to call, a
peaceful holiday bungalow in the hills of Sri Lanka.
Janaka, a prematurely retired Special forces guy from the Sri Lankan Army, has taken it upon himself to enhance his army training, quite boldly, towards the hospitality industry by undertaking a holiday home in the hills of his hometown named Moragolla, in the district of Kandy, at a place called the “ATT’s Eagles nest.”
His Mission is to give an extremely clean home primarily, and secondarily a comfortable setting whilst catering to the guests’ culinary requirements to the best of his available resources and knowledge.
His vision is to make sure that the Guests’ experience is worth their while and to attract their future attention towards the industry, environment, location and the brand “Sri Lanka” for the future sustenance of its people and his new-found profession.
The army training has undoubtedly helped Janaka in achieving his methodical upkeep of the house. The bed linen must be ironed and any lines on it should be meticulously straight. The cutlery to be stowed neatly in compartments and the teaspoon must be placed on the saucer under the cup’s holder when presented. The front door dust free and the car park should be rid of any obstruction whilst the garden is always kept green, trimmed, and swept. His magic wand, a sparklingly clean white cloth is his weapon. Once everything is ready for the arrival of any guest, he takes this cloth around and wipes all the tabletops and the pantry with it. If it is stained, he is dissatisfied. He will start all over again, armed with his checklist.
Clothed in a batik sarong and white shirt for the arrival of the guests, he places a deodorizer moments before their arrival. Greeting with a traditional “Ayubowan” of Sri Lanka, helping them with their bags, he sets the table for a treat of herbal tea and sweets made at home by his wife.
Subsequently, he explains the finer points to the apartment and gives his telephone number along with the location of his house (which is nearby), for any further requirements of the guests. He only arrives when summoned. His intentions are to leave the guests alone, in order to enjoy their relaxing holiday in this serene mountain environment without any disturbances or worry.
Any special meal requirements are made to the best of his and his wife’s ability and the Sri Lankan meals are prepared using the traditional practices of the up-country Sinhala methodologies that were employed by their Kandyan ancestors coupled with precise attention and care.
His family will be your family for the duration of your stay. His kitchen is your kitchen, his gardens are your gardens, his Tuk-Tuk is your vehicle and his friendly villagers will be your friendly villagers. He will walk with you and show you the surroundings whilst making you herbal remedies for your weary travelled bodies and eventually make one feel the pampered.
In this remote village of Moragolla, Janaka is an excellent employee, a true confidante, a genuine caretaker, and a professional guardian…. In a quintessential way,
The
perfect Caretaker!
